Let’s grab our hooks and get started!
🧶 Materials Needed
To make this exact look, you will need:
Yarn: 100% Cozy Pure Cotton Yarn in "Blush Pink" (Medium/Worsted weight) – approx. 500g.
Crochet Hook: 4.0 mm (G) wooden crochet hook.
Buttons: 5 or 6 round white wooden buttons (approx. 20mm).
Accessories: A small white pompom (for the hat).
Tools: Yarn needle, scissors, and a measuring tape.
📝 Abbreviations (US Terms)
MR: Magic Ring
CH: Chain
DC: Double Crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
INC: Increase (2 DC in the same stitch)
CH-SP: Chain Space
SL ST: Slip Stitch
Step 1: Crocheting the Star Base
Unlike a regular star blanket worked in continuous rounds, this swaddle is worked back and forth in rows starting from the center. This creates the front opening for the buttons!
Row 1: Create a Magic Ring. Ch 3 (counts as 1 DC). Work 9 DC into the ring. Do NOT join. Turn your work. (10 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3. Work 1 DC in the same space. Work 2 DC (INC) in every stitch across. Turn. (20 sts)
Row 3 (Creating the 5 Points): This is where we start forming the star! You will work [3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC] into the same space to create the sharp points of the star, skipping stitches in the "valleys" between the points.
Continuing the Base: Keep repeating your star point increase rounds (working [2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC] into every Ch-2 peak, and skipping 2 stitches at the bottom of every valley).
Pro Tip: Make sure your tension is completely even so your star points lay flat on the table!
Step 2: Adding the Cozy Hood
Once your star base is large enough to swaddle your baby (usually around 25-30 rows depending on your tension), it's time to add the hood.
The hood is worked directly onto the top-most point of your star.
Attach your blush pink yarn to the top right side of the top star point.
Work rows of HDC (Half Double Crochet) back and forth across the top point to create a rectangular flap.
Once the flap is tall enough to cover a baby's head (approx. 7-8 inches), fold it in half and slip stitch the top seam closed to create the hood shape.
Step 3: The Button Band and Finishing Touches
To make the swaddle functional, we need a clean edge and a place for our buttons!
The Border: Rejoin your yarn at the bottom of the front opening. Work one row of Single Crochet (SC) evenly up the right side, around the hood opening, and down the left side.
Buttonholes: On your second row of the border (on the left side panel), create buttonholes by chaining 2 and skipping 2 stitches evenly spaced down the edge.
Sewing the Buttons: Grab your yarn needle, a bit of matching thread, and your white wooden buttons. Sew them securely onto the right panel directly opposite your buttonholes.
🎁 Bonus: The Matching Pom-Pom Beanie!
Don't have enough yarn for the whole swaddle? Make the matching hat!
The Brim: Ch 10. Work SC in the Back Loop Only (BLO) back and forth until the band fits comfortably around the baby's head. Seam the ends together.
The Body: Work rounds of Double Crochet (DC) into the top edge of your ribbed brim.
Decrease & Close: After 5 inches, begin decreasing (DC 2 together) until the top is closed.
The Pom-Pom: Attach a cute, fluffy white pompom to the very top!
